Eef Hilgers studeerde in 2012 af aan de kunstacademie St. Joost met Een meisje, jij weet zelf (20’) over meisjes die via YouTube actief hun eigen nieuwe identiteit proberen vorm te geven. Deze film werd geselecteerd voor IDFA 2012 en leverde haar een TENT Academy Award 2012 op.
Eef richt zich als maker vooral op de veranderingen die het internet en nieuwe technologieën hebben op onze samenleving en gedrag. Zo maakte ze Lieve k#ttelefoon (IDFA 2014) over de haat liefde verhouding van een puber met haar telefoon en SHAME/FAME over de verhalen achter online viral videos en #pestverhaal over online pesten. De film #pestverhaal ontving special mention van de kinderjury tijdens de Berlinale 2019 en werd genomineerd als beste jeugddocumentaire op het Cinkekid van 2019.
Ook regisseerde ze voor de documentaire jeugdseries Wij blijven vrienden (VARA) een jeugdserie waarin een gezicht wordt gegeven aan kinderen die net buiten het kinderpardon vallen én hun beste vriendjes. De jeugdserie Bikkels, een jeugdserie over jonge mantelzorgers. Deze serie won de ‘Rocky Award Children Non Fiction’ en de Cinekid Kinderkastprijs Non Fictie’. En regisseerde Eef meerdere afleveringen van Mensjesrechten, waaronder twee afleveringen over tieners die niet meer bij hun ouders kunnen wonen.
Daarnaast regisseerde Eef meerdere interview programma’s met vooral een culturele insteek. Zo deed ze de item regie op Lowlands festival 2019 voor de VPRO. Regisseert ze Doctalks (VPRO) een interviewprogramma waarin er met nationale en internationale documentaire regisseurs wordt gesproken over hun nieuwste films. En Dagelijkse dosis design (VPRO) waarin we op bezoek gaan bij de meest opzienbarende designers van de Dutch Design week.

Eef Hilgers graduated from the Art Academy St. Joost in 2012 with A girl, you know (2012) about girls who actively try to shape their own identity through YouTube. This film was selected for IDFA and won the TENT Academy Award 2012.
As filmmaker Eef focuses primarily on the changes that internet and new technologies have on our society and our behavior. Eef made My dearest f#cking phone (IDFA 2014) about the love-hate relationship with you mobile phone and SHAME/FAME (2017) about the stories behind online viral videos. Her last film #Bullyingstory (special mention Berlinale 2019) is about the consequences of cyberbullying.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Nowadays, people stay with one leg in the ‘real world’ and the other in the online world. In the online world they have to deal with the same things: they fall in love, get to know others and develop and search for who they want to be. The only thing is that the online world floats through the air and consists of mainly short pieces of text, images and undifferentiated videos. As a filmmaker I try to visualize that invisible and apparently flat world and bring it to live. Not to point with a finger and to show the fears from the media, but to give people an insight into the meaning and consequences of everything they do and see on the web. That way, hopefully, they can better decide for themselves how they want to deal with that fantastic world wide web.
